Lesson Plan: Life Cycle (Writing - Grade 1)

Subject:  Writing

Grade: 1

Lesson Objective: To write an informational piece about a life cycle

Common Core StandardCCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.2- Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Have you ever told something about something that you learned?  How did you do it?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • Telling people about things that you have learned is a lot of fun.  It is also a good way to teach someone about something.
  • When you are teaching someone about something that you learned, it is important to start by telling them what you learned about.
  • It is then good to share a few details that explain what you learned.
  • Writing about something that you know about is the same as talking about it.  When you write, it is important to start with what you learned.  This is called the topic.
  • After you share the topic, you write a few details explaining more about the topic.
  • Today, you are going to be writing about a life cycle.  Think about the life cycles that we have talked about today, or even another one that you might know about.
  • When you write, you will explain that you are writing about a life cycle.  You will then add 1 to 3 details about that life cycle.
  • For example, “I learned about life cycles.  A life cycle is the changes that happen to an animal during its life.  A dog grows from a puppy into a grown-up dog.”  (Write this on the board for the students to see)
  • I would like you to think about what life cycle you will write about.  Raise your hand if you know.  Great!  You will now start writing.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share what you wrote?  (Allow the students to share.)
