Parents will appreciate the ideas and tips they will find at Kids Off the Couch (KOTC). The site was designed by mothers who wanted to take advantage of their own children’s "screen time" and to share their ideas with other parents. The site suggests that "you have to get on the couch to get off the couch." The "secret formula" is to pair a film with a cultural excursion -- such as watching E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and then planning a visit to the local planetarium or star gazing in your own backyard. These pairings are called Popcorn Adventures, and each includes a synopsis of the film, KOTC Kernels (bits of wisdom about the film), conversation starters, suggestions for particular cities, home projects, and cultural connections. Visitors to the site can sign up for the weekly e-mail. All previous adventures are archived for easy access.
