CONTENT: Dole 5 A Day has been around for a while and does an excellent job of encouraging elementary school children to eat their fruits and vegetables every day for good health. It includes facts and lots of interactive fun.
AESTHETICS: The site has bright child-friendly graphics in a well-designed layout. Special plugins are required for the music and video.
ORGANIZATION: Navigation through the site is user friendly. There is a top menu bar that gives access to the various areas of the site as well as graphical links from the main page.
REVIEW: This is a must see site for good nutrition! Kids will love getting the facts from their friends such as Juanita Watermelon, Amber Orange, Cornelius Corn, the Green Pea Gang, or Peter Peach. The information is presented in a way that students will keep coming back for more. Children are encouraged to set goals and sign contracts with their families to be a 5 a Day Kid. The fun and engaging activities include a detective game, supermarket search, salad factory and slider puzzle. There are also "Jammin 5 a Day songs," videos, a fruit and vegetable encyclopedia and a cookbook for kids. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will find a link to the Teacher section with everything you need to get your students excited about eating fruits and vegetables. It includes cross-curricular lesson plans, curriculum standards, background information, suggestions for using the kids' pages, and much more. There is also a section for families on how to make 5 a day fun and easy for kids.
