iPad App Review: Madagascar Math Ops

App Name:  Madagascar Math Ops

Cost:  $2.99

What does it promise? An adventure game featuring popular characters from the Madagascar films, this app strengthens students’ math skills.

Math opsDoes it deliver? The Madagascar Zoosters (Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria) are in trouble, and it’s up to your students and the penguins to save the day by using math skills. Players help Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico as they progress through a mathematical covert operation to free their friends from the enemy agents.

A new penguin invention—The Equationator, a unique machine that uses math to create soda-pop fuel—is critical to success. The penguins use soda pop-powered jetpacks in an aerial assault, in order to bust the Madagascar Zoosters out of their cages. Students solve mathematical problems and use special jetpack abilities to finish every level.

In-game currency unlocks content, power-ups and worlds. Players can earn these through game play or purchase additional in-game coins via their iTunes accounts. (This feature also can be disabled.)

Can I use it in my classroom?  Math Ops is totally classroom-appropriate and can be used as a reward, or to supplement elementary math lessons.

All apps can be found in the iPad apps store under education.
