Ocean Mysteries, Legends, and Customs

Brief Description
Students use the Internet to research mysteries, legends, and customs related to the ocean. Students choose one topic and create a short story about it.

Objectives

Students demonstrate abilities to use the Internet to research information. Students demonstrate creative thinking, creative writing, and organization skills to create a short story about a topic.

Materials Needed

computers with Internet access and printer, writing paper, pens/pencils, student-chosen materials to illustrate their short stories

Lesson Plan

  • Ask students to define the words mystery, legend, and custom. Explain to students that numerous mysteries, legends, and customs are related to the ocean.
  • Have students explore the sites Ocean Mystery & Legend and "Ocean Planet" Legends and Customs of the Sea. Ask each student to choose one of the mysteries, legends, or customs listed, then write and illustrate a short story about the topic. Variation: Have students explore the sites and write an original mystery, legend, or custom about the ocean.

Assessment

Evaluates students' stories.
