Words from the Ocean

Brief Description
Students study some common words that have origins in maritime cultures and explore how the meanings of the words have changed over the years.

Objectives

Students

  • identify how the modern meanings of several words have changed from the meanings they originally had in maritime cultures,
  • recognize how the ocean's prominence in our culture has shaped our language,
  • construct hypotheses as to the original, ocean-related meanings of several everyday words.
