Principal Ideas #41
Just think of Principal Ideas as a virtual show-and-tell for principals. Each week in the coming school year we'll present four or five new principal-tested ideas. Send in your idea today! See the sidebar to learn how to be part of Principal Ideas.
Send Your Cafeteria Staff to Lunch
Cafeteria staff members need recognition and thanks for their hard work too. As a thank you, our faculty, staff, and administration sent our cafeteria staff to lunch! To be in guidelines with the health department, our cafeteria workers prepared that day's food for the students. It was our job to put the lunch into bags to be used for that day's picnic-style lunch. The cafeteria staff was sent to a local restaurant of their choice and had a nice leisurely lunch. Upon their return, we had cleaned up the cafeteria and all they had to do was plan for the next day. Everyone was so excited that they were able to "eat lunch" somewhere other than the cafeteria. It was a win-win for everyone. The teaching staff got to experience how demanding serving 400+ children can be; they formed a new appreciation for the cafeteria staff's work. We're Wild About Our Teachers
Last year, I used the theme "We're Wild About our Teachers" for Teacher Appreciation Week. Each day, we selected a different animal to represent the celebration we would have: Thanks for this idea go to Dr. Bonnie Barrett, principal, Florence Parsons Pre-K School, Garland, Texas Incentive Boosts Staff Attendance
In today's high-stakes testing environment, schools are assessed based on several factors and the information is public knowledge. In order to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), schools must meet all of the Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs). One AMO is that each school have a 94% student attendance rate. Since student attendance is such a focus and we are doing many things to keep that rate high, I decided to implement an incentive to improve teachers' attendance too. Each month a teacher has perfect attendance, they are awarded a certificate that entitles them to one hour of free time. This award is cumulative. The one hour can be used to keep an outside personal appointment or certificates can be accumulated to take a whole day, which is not deducted from their regular earned time. Teachers have responded well to the incentive. It has helped raise our teacher attendance rate. Movie Day Fundraiser
On the last Friday of every other month, we schedule a Movie Day Fundraiser for the last period-and-a-half of the school day. Three or four classrooms are transformed into mini theaters so several different movies can be shown at the same time. Students choose which movie they want to see. To maximize earnings from this fundraiser, we make a special effort to advertise our Movie Days. Of course, teachers' support is critical to make this work.
