Subject:  Math

Grade: 3

Lesson Objective: To use multiplication and division to solve equations

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.4: Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 × ? = 48, 5 = _ ÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ?

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Why do you think that it is important to know number or fact families? (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • A number or fact family is a group of equations that are made using the same set of numbers.  A number or fact family shows the relationships between the three numbers used.
  • When using addition and subtraction, there are four addition and subtraction equations created using three numbers.  For example, 2 + 3= 5, 3 + 2=5, 5 – 2= 3 and 5 – 3 = 2
  • The same is true when using multiplication and division.  There are four equations that can be created using three numbers.  For example, 3 x 4= 12, 4 x 3= 12, 12 ÷ 3= 4, 12 ÷ 4= 3
  • When learning math facts, it is important to understand how numbers work together in an equation.  A number or fact family helps you understand.
  • If you look at an equation and notice that a number is missing, you should think about fact families and that will help you to figure out the missing number.
  • Now, you are going to be doing some work with fact families.  All of the problems will use either multiplication or division and there will be a number missing.  When you are done, we will go over all of the answers.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

  • Who would like to share your answers?  (Allow the students to share.)
