Subject:  Writing

Grade: 3

Lesson Objective: To write an opinion on if harvesting was easier 100 years ago or now

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.1-  Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.

Materials:

Starter:

Say:

  • Do you like to give your opinion?  Why or why not?  (Allow the students to answer.)

Main:

Say:

  • It can be a lot of fun to share your opinion about different topics and it can also be difficult.
  • It is important to give reasons for why you think or believe the way you do.  If you do not give reasons, no one will understand why you feel the way that you do.
  • For example, if you want to go to the playground and not the library, you need to explain why.  You could give reasons such as it is a nice day and you want to be outside, you have a lot of energy and want to run around or you do not think you can be quiet enough for the library.
  • Today, you are going to be giving your opinion on harvesting food.  When you read Little House in the Big Woods, you read about Pa and Uncle Henry harvesting oats.  They had to use tools and do everything by hand.  Remember, they lived in the late 1800’s.
  • These days, most farmers harvest food such as wheat and oats using tractors and big machines.  The farmers drive the tractors and the machines cut the wheat and oats.
  • You are now going to be writing your opinion on whether you think that harvesting food is easier now than it was when Pa and Uncle Henry were harvesting the oats.
  • You need to think about what your opinion is and then you need to give reasons that support the way that you think and feel.
  • Does anyone have any questions?

Feedback:

Say:

  • Who would like to share what you wrote?  (Allow the students to share.)
