Lesson Plan: Poetry

Subject:  ELA- Reading

Grade: 4

Lesson Objective: To determine what a poem is about and read it fluently

Common Core Standard:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.4.B- Read grade-level prose and poetry orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.

  • When you think about poetry, what do you think about?  (Allow the students to answer.)

  • Poetry is a type of writing that has a certain style and rhythm.  There are many different types of poems.
  • Some poems tell a story or tell about a specific person, place or feeling.  Nursery rhymes are also a type of poems.  Poems can be serious or funny.
  • Poems are meant to be read a certain way.  In some poems, words at the end of the lines rhyme, so when reading those poems, those words should be emphasized.
  • Each group of words in a poem is called a stanza.  Usually, there is a pattern with the lines of a stanza that rhyme.  For example, lines 2 and 4 and 6 and 8 might rhyme.
  • Poems are also supposed to be read so that the words flow together. 
  • When reading poems, it is important to pay attention to what the poem is about what the feelings that are in the poem.  This will help you to figure out how to read it.
  • If a poem is very serious, you should read it in a serious voice.  If a poem is funny, you can have fun and be silly while you are reading it.
  • Now, you are going to be reading a poem.  Read the poem and think about what the poem is about and the feelings that are in the poem.
  • Then, you will answer the questions about the poem.   
  • When you have finished the questions, you should read the poem again, but this time, you will find a partner and read the poem to a partner.  Your partner will then have a turn to read the poem to you.
