Best of 1998 Graphic A+ Math -- OVERALL: A+
This site was created by a group of software engineers and an elementary school teacher as an interactive math Web site for kids. Users can view flashcards (where the user supplies a missing component) for basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as reducing fractions, currency calculations, and geometric shapes. Viewers can play a math version of bingo or play a "Hidden Picture" game. The Homework Helper section allows users to input a problem and its answer and the computer will reply whether or not the solution is correct. Users must retry until the answer is right. This is a great way to teach math to students because they will be having fun while they are learning and they'll want to learn more. Individual lesson plans could be built around the site or students could visit the site on their own to improve their math skills.
GRADE LEVEL: 3-8

Best of 1998 Graphic Anatomy of a Murder -- OVERALL: A+
Viewers follow a murder case, from the discovery of the body up to through the trial of the accused. Every aspect of the tale is researched and legally accurate, which makes it a great resource for educators. The murder and characters are fictional but nothing about the legal process is made up or embellished. Because of the subject matter, some of the material is for mature audiences and educators should preview the site. This is an interesting and original way to teach the basics of the American justice system.
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12

Best of 1998 Graphic BJ Pinchbeck's Homework Help -- OVERALL: A
Eleven-year-old Bruce Pinchbeck and his father have created this wonderful Web site to provide resources and information to help users with homework and research. The site has increased the number of its links to 500 (from 400 when it was first reviewed). The well-planned site has links to the Internet covering subjects such as math, science, social studies, languages, history, music, art, and computers. Most categories also have sub-categories, which makes locating specific information easier. This is such a great site -- not only because of the quality and quantity of resources, but also because a student created it to benefit other students.
GRADE LEVEL: 3-12

Best of 1998 Graphic The Chalkboard -- OVERALL: A+
One of the highlights of this site is that it's free to educators. The site is funded by corporate sponsorship and provides information on corporate education programs, curriculum materials, grants and scholarships, and services. The purpose is to make these materials more available to teachers, students, parents, and community members. Each section uses the same search engine format, with information shown by subject, grade, and/or location. Administrators, teachers, and others interested in their schools should keep this site bookmarked. With the American education system in dire financial straits, educators can use all the help they can get.

Best of 1998 Graphic Dan's Wild, Wild Weather Page -- OVERALL: A+
Some subjects just seem more fun when they're presented in the right way. That's what happens at Dan's Wild, Wild Weather Page. Dan Satterfield is the chief meteorologist at an Alabama television station; he put together the information and activities at the site for elementary and middle school students. The site has information on El Nino, climate, lightning, and tornadoes that students will find interesting. Educators can get complete classroom weather units and other weather resources. Teachers can supplement their own lesson plans with the material here, or create new ones. The site can also be an interactive classroom experience for science and weather lessons. Educators and students will enjoy the site but beware of the thunderclap and rainstorm sound effects that greet viewers at the home page - they can catch you off guard.
GRADE LEVEL: K-8

Best of 1998 Graphic Enchanted Learning -- OVERALL: A+
There are so many aspects to this site it's hard to know where to start. The Web site serves as an introduction to the Internet for young viewers (as young as preschool). The site has numerous pages of information and activities covering a variety of subjects. Users can "zoom" into the sections for more details and highlight dinosaurs, marine life, birds, wildlife, or everyday life in a foreign country. The "Little Explorers" dictionary is an online pictionary with links to more than 1,000 educational activities and games on the Internet. By itself, the dictionary is a great find and is available in English, English-French, English-German, English-Portuguese, or English-Spanish versions. Teachers will find a number of craft ideas and parents can use the site to safely surf the Internet with their children. This is definitely a great example of a fun, educational Web site.
GRADE LEVEL: K-8

Best of 1998 Graphic Exploring Leonardo -- OVERALL: A+
Known as a "Renaissance" man, this Web site about Leonardo da Vinci lives up to his reputation. The most exciting aspect of the site is its across-the-curriculum ability to teach students about the man and his work. The site has four main areas highlighting inventions and machinery, 3D representation in art, a biography of da Vinci, and his curious habit of writing in reverse. With lessons in science, art, history, and language arts, students can experience the thread of creativity that makes learning and exploring all subjects fun and exciting. Hypertext words throughout the site link to a glossary - a nice feature. Exploring Leonardo is a diverse site that students in all subject areas can creatively and interactively learn from.
GRADE LEVEL: 5-12

Best of 1998 Graphic Foreign Languages for Travelers -- OVERALL: A+
Ever wish you could take a crash course in a foreign language, just to get some basics before a trip? This Web site will let you do just that. Viewers will find over 60 languages presented at the site. Each language section has links to basic words, numbers, shopping and dining, travel, directions, places, and time and dates. The site lists where the language is officially spoken, provides links to other resources about the language, and has links to sites about the places where the language is used. Some language sections include links to translating dictionaries. This is a fun and an educational site. While the intended audience is travelers, educators could easily use the site to enhance foreign language lessons. The site would also make an excellent place for students to practice.
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12+

Best of 1998 Graphic funbrain.com -- OVERALL: A+
The name says it all -- this is a really fun site. Users will be so entertained they won't realize they're learning. Viewers will find activities and games that teach spelling, math, and grammar. Educators will love the setup. Each activity includes instructions, explanations, and illustrations. The site has expanded greatly since it was first reviewed. There are now six math games, six word games, four "world" games, and a matching game to test memory. This is a great site that is getting better all the time. Teachers should bring their students by for some online learning and fun.
GRADE LEVEL: 3-12

Best of 1998 Graphic Geographia -- OVERALL: A+
This is a revision of the InterKnowledge Web site. Some of its old units are available from the main page, listed under "Destinations," and categorized by continent. Each section of the site houses a complete unit. The site is still a little confusing to navigate because each unit uses different navigation tools. However, navigation within each unit is fairly simple. A few of the sections have sound and movie files. Users will find immense amounts of information on a number of countries and places. This is a great smorgasbord of information for history, political science, culture and area studies, and geography teachers and students. The site brims with content and is quite pleasing to look at.
GRADE LEVEL: 5-12

Best of 1998 Graphic The Great Plant Escape -- OVERALL: A+
Another example of making a potentially dry lesson a lot more fun! The Great Plant Escape is an elementary program to teach 4th and 5th grade students plant science; by making it into a mystery, the site entices students to learn. The premise of the site is for users to help Detective LePlant solve the mystery of plant life by identifying the different parts of plants, what each part does, and how plants grow. Users will learn how foods grow and find activities that make use of math, science, language arts, social studies, music, and art concepts. Viewers can individualize their programs by selecting activities -- some activities are for independent work and some are for group work. At the end of the five lesson series, teachers can quiz students on what they've learned. This is a great way to combine science, the Internet, and fun.
GRADE LEVEL: K-8

Best of 1998 Graphic Guide To Grammar And Writing -- OVERALL: A+
Professor Charles Darling of Capital Community-Technical College created this site for his English classes and offers the site to the general public for help with grammar. The Web site has online "lessons" explaining various grammar rules and problems. Material is categorized in levels -- "Sentence Level," "Paragraph Level," and "Essay Level" -- each with subtopics covering specific grammatical concepts. The site includes online quizzes for most lessons (or the quizzes can be printed out for offline use). Logs of past questions and answers from the "Ask Grammar!" section are available at the site, or users can pose new questions. The site has done a lion's share of the work of creating interesting lesson plans for grammar.
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12+

Best of 1998 Graphic History Place -- OVERALL: A+
Similar to a museum, the History Place™ changes its exhibits frequently to highlight specific eras, events, or people in history. Timely special presentations are displayed at the site as well. Topics are examined in depth and are generally divided into units for easier studying. The site has other features such as a photo and speech of the week; essays on history from historians; and a tourism guide to historic places in America. Users can find homework help. This is a great resource for history and current events teachers. Entire lesson plans could be created based on the information at this site. The site could also be used as an interactive tool to supplement history classes.
GRADE LEVEL: 5-12+

Best of 1998 Graphic Legend Of Captain Dave -- OVERALL: A+
Nothing sparks the imagination of students like a treasure hunt. In the Legend of Captain Dave, viewers must follow the story and answer questions about pirates along the way. The site provides hyperlinks to pages outside the site where users will find the answers. The site is well laid out and illustrated. Students will find the story intriguing and the topic matter interesting. Viewers who answer all the questions and solve the riddle receive an official pirate membership. Users can even get additional (more difficult) questions to answer and become "officers"! The uses for this site are multiple. Educators could use the site simply as an introduction to navigating the Internet. The site is also great for history lessons centering on pirates. Finally, a combination of both allows educators to guide their students in an interactive lesson plan.
GRADE LEVEL: 3-12

Best of 1998 Graphic Library Spot -- OVERALL: A+
Even librarians need a reference section! The site was designed to create one spot for users to find library and reference sites. And, just like a library, there's a little something for everyone here. Educators, researchers, librarians, or anyone else looking for information on the Internet can find resources geared to their interests. The site categories include links to several kinds of libraries as well as to biographies, calculators, dictionaries, calendars, maps, encyclopedia, and statistics. Most sections have several categories, which each lead to pages with many links. This is a great reference site to bookmark -- it's direct, well organized, and practical - just like a library.

Best of 1998 Graphic Middleweb -- OVERALL: A+
This year was a hot year for middle school. As education reform took center stage in America, middle school reform was in the spotlight. Issues of gender, age, class size, and content are under scrutiny. As the interest in middle school increases, the site is growing and adding to its resources as well. Middleweb has even added an entire section on education reform. Viewers will find the latest news and topic discussions, with archives to past news pages. Educators can find information on curriculum and instruction. Original content at the site includes an interesting section called "Middleweb Diaries," which presents weekly diaries from two middle-grade teachers' attempts to help more kids succeed. Users will find links to other resources, divided by topic; and they can now search the site with the search engine. Anyone with an interest in middle schools has to keep an eye on this site for great things to come!
GRADE LEVEL: 5-8; Professional

Best of 1998 Graphic Neuroscience For Kids -- OVERALL: A+
Quite an impressive site! The main section of the site, "Explore the Nervous System," lets users read about the various parts of the nervous system, learn about the five senses, and participate in experiments, games, and activities. The site has links to additional resources about the nervous system. Educators will find resources for teaching neuroscience. Viewers can use the search engine to find specific information or to pose a question to a team of neuroscientists from around the world who have volunteered to answer questions. (Viewers should look over the already posted questions first.) Users can sign up for a free newsletter or find out about Brain Awareness Week. One of the most interesting elements of the site is a form that has been set up for users to write or paste notes that can be emailed to themselves. This is a fantastic site, full of useful information. Science and biology teachers and students will learn a lot here. The information could easily be used for interactive lessons.
GRADE LEVEL: 5-12

Best of 1998 Graphic US GenWeb Project -- OVERALL: A+
Interested in tracing your heritage? This grassroots undertaking is the place to start. The USGenWeb Project coordinates volunteers throughout America to provide Internet Web sites for genealogical research for every county and state in the country. The Project is non-commercial and free to users. The state Web sites include resources such as family reunion bulletin boards, state histories, and maps showing the changing county boundaries. The WorldGenWeb Project is currently working at placing genealogical information for every country in the world, and every region within each country, online. Teachers can use this site as a resource for part of a lesson on genealogy or as a gateway to discussions of heritage, emigration, and immigration.
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12+

Best of 1998 Graphic Virtual Field Trips -- OVERALL: A+
These are not your ordinary field trips. The site arranges the trips in sequential order to build a story for viewers to follow. Each field trip covers a single topic; experts on the subject have selected the best sites on the Web related to it. Each trip begins with a "Trailhead" page listing vocabulary words and concepts to be learned on the trip. Each page of the trip is a "trail marker," or stop, that describes a site. Educators can get student printouts and a teacher's guide in the Teacher's Resources section. The trips can be preloaded into the computer (explained at the site) to increase viewing time. The resources here are free and well-prepared. This is a great way to introduce a class to the Internet.
