Vote on English Immersion Waiver
Voters in Amherst, Massachusetts, are weighing whether to seek a waiver from the state’s English-immersion law passed in November. The law requires schools to move non-English-speaking students into regular classrooms after a year of intensive instruction in the English language.

Hands-On Algebra a Hit
Seventh graders in Christine Supinger’s mathematics classes at Hopewell Junior High School in Ohio are using more than paper and pencils to solve algebraic equations. Scales, colored dice, and plastic game pieces all are utilized in the quest for the elusive X. Supinger has used the hands-on approach since attending a workshop in 1993; she recently was awarded the National Teacher Training Institute’s Outstanding Teacher Award.

Ban on Time-Out Rooms Reconsidered
The Minnesota Department of Education is reconsidering a proposal to eliminate locked time-out rooms in public schools. Special education administrators and teachers argue that without the rooms, some students would have to be transferred to residential treatment centers.

Bonus’ Teachers Bail Out
Almost half the teachers who entered Massachusetts classrooms since 1999 through a fast-track teacher certification program rather than a traditional teacher-education program already have left teaching, according to a recent study. In addition, a majority of the mid-career professionals, who received $20,000 signing bonuses, were not assigned to schools with the most dire teacher shortages. This despite the fact that one of the goals of the program was to fill vacancies in struggling schools.
