Schools Lure Truants with Jobs
A new anti-truancy policy being piloted in 27 Chicago Public Schools this year promises chronically truant students summer jobs if they attend school consistently. Administrators have identified about 2,000 students who would qualify for the incentive.

Talk of "Shadow District" in LA
School reformers in Los Angeles are discussing forming a system of high-quality charter schools that could become a "shadow" public school system in the city. The Los Angeles Alliance for Student Achievement would like to open about 100 charter schools to serve about 50,000 students over the next five years.

Wedding Favors City Kids
When Stephen Kay, a fifth grade teacher in West Hartford, Connecticut, married his wife Anne recently, they decided to share their happiness with children at an urban school. The couple used the $500 they had set aside for guest favors to buy 150 books for the school library at Burr Elementary School in Hartford.

Staggered Hours Suit Kids
Faced with swelling enrollments and shrinking school budgets, some high schools in Arizona are opting for staggered schedules. One school, Sunrise Mountain High School, has five different starting times for students and staff, ranging from 6:15 a.m. to 12:19 p.m.
