Parents Can Probe Teachers
Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, parents can ask to review
the credentials of their children’s teachers. Among the areas parents
can inquire about are whether the teacher has state certification for
the grade levels and subjects he or she is teaching; whether the teacher
was granted an emergency waiver because not enough licensed teachers are
available; and what undergraduate and graduate degrees the teacher has
been awarded.

California Autism Rate Soaring
The number of California children reported as affected by autism has risen
from 4,911 in August 1993 to 18,460 in July 2002, according to a study
done by the University of California, Davis. The increase does not appear
to be attributable to increased awareness of the condition, less stringent
diagnostic criteria, or shifts in population, according to the study.

Reducing Time in Time-Out
Officials of the Minnesota department of education are considering a rule
change that would limit the amount of time a special education student
could spend in an unlocked time-out room and ban the use of locked time-out
rooms altogether. Some special education teachers say, however, that the
changes would hinder their ability to keep staff and students safe.

Change of a Finger?
Students at Parker Memorial School in Tolland, Connecticut, no longer
have to pull out a handful of money to pay for their lunches; all they
need are their fingertips. A scanner checks a student's fingerprints,
and the cost of a lunch automatically is deducted from an account set
up by his or her parents. Parker Memorial is the first school in the state
to have the program.
