Revised Teacher Prep Programs Sought
Carnegie Corporation of New York has asked four colleges to submit proposals
for teacher preparation programs that present teaching as a "clinical
profession" with supervised "residencies"for candidates.
The four colleges are Bank Street College of Education in New York City;
California State University, Northridge; Michigan State University, and
the University of Virginia.

A Lighter Load
In response to a California state law limiting the weight of student textbooks,
Sun Valley Charter High School in Ramona has replaced all its texts with
computers. Students get their assignments from electronic books and the
Internet.

Lunch Policies Unfair to Minorities
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says the U.S. Department
of Agriculture should change its policy prohibiting schools from serving
soymilk or other non-dairy beverages as part of a subsidized lunch. Many
minority students are lactose intolerant, and under current policy, only
can get an alternative to cow’s milk by submitting a doctor’s note.

Teaching the Evolution Debate
An Ohio board of education committee has recommended that science classes
in the state cover both evolution and the controversy about its validity.
