Schools Test for Tobacco Use
Some U.S. schools have started administering urine tests to students to determine if they have been using tobacco. Punishment for a positive test can include school probation and temporary suspension from extracurricular activities.

Walking in Their Children’s Footsteps
For the fourth year, parents of schoolchildren in Anchorage, Alaska, walked with their children on their route to school or bus stop, and noted potential safety hazards to report to local authorities. The effort was part of the International Walk to School Day.

Chicago Doubles Number of Reading Aides
The number of reading specialists assigned to low-performing Chicago schools doubled this week. About half the system’s elementary schools now have specialists to help teachers improve reading instruction.

"Weapons of Mass Destruction" in the Café?
A high-powered ad campaign calling high-fat school lunches “weapons of mass destruction” is slated to launch next week by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The group said the U.S. Department of Agriculture's practice of shipping surplus beef, pork, and cheese to school lunch programs is at least partially to blame for the growing trend of childhood obesity in this country.
