What Kids Can Do
Web site name: McLean Online
Web site creator: Steve Smith, McLean Science/Technology Magnet Elementary School, Wichita, Kansas

"Too often I think we underestimate what kids can do," Steve Smith told Education World. "We have parents come in and tell us their children are doing things that the adults don't even know how to do -- such as creating PowerPoint presentations, multimedia games, and Web pages."
Smith is a fifth grade classroom teacher at McLean Science/Technology Magnet Elementary School in Wichita, Kansas. Although his school focuses on the same standards as all the other schools in the district, at McLean those goals are achieved through an emphasis on science and technology. Because of that focus, students have the opportunity to learn about such activities as Web page design, and to join after school science and robotics clubs.
"The main purpose for McLean Online is to showcase our school and display some of the work our students have accomplished," said Smith. "We hope the site will help members of our community decide whether McLean is the right school for their elementary students. The site also helps family and friends of our students keep abreast of their progress."
Projects completed by students at the school are posted in Our Class Pages; they illustrate the amazing things elementary-aged students can accomplish.
Smith's Fifth Grade page provides a variety of resources, including lessons; activities; games; WebQuests on such topics as character education, light, and sound; information about the William Allen White Children's Book Award; an opportunity for students to read and vote for their favorite children's books; and much more.
Smith's students love having a medium on which they can publish their work. "Other educators have contacted us about various projects we are doing and have asked for more information," Smith stated. "We hope that teachers and educators can use the information on our site as a springboard for their own instructional endeavors."
